Who here is in a band?
also I'm really interested in playing guitar, I own one that i got back in 8th gradeish, its quite terrible, I think its a Peavey Raptor. But anyways being a stubborn young child back then i gave up playing after making no progress at all. Anyone have any good pointers about learning to play guitar and such?
I've been thinking of taking lessons or trying to self teach but i'm not sure.
any help would be sweet.
love me

My first guitar was an ebay special acoustic when I was about nine.
At that time my musical experience was listening to lots of country in my mom's car and I had like every NOW! cd there was.
I thought I wanted to play guitar, but the combination of the shitty quality of the guitar I got and the fact that I was a child turned me off of it quickly.
I was about 12 or 13 when I actually started getting into music big time. I was all about Linking Park and Blink 182. Bands like The White Stripes, New Found Glory, and Yellowcard are what got me wanting to really learn to play guitar and maybe start a band.
I got into some (what I thought at the time was screamo) which was basicly Underoath and Thursday and shit like that. I loved it. But I'll be truthful, what really made me want to play guitar was Saosin. I heard a couple trax online and I was hooked. So I went out to a pawn shop and bought a mexican made fender for 200 bucks and a cheap 20 watt amp.
At first I was like, okay I need lessons or something. So i bought a book and a couple dvd's but that didn't help me. I ended up actually sitting in my room for hours trying to figure out how to play my favorite songs.
As time went by, I got better and I could play most of the stuff I liked pretty well. My musical tastes broadened just a little when I turned 14. I started getting into some punk (ramones, old AFI) and some more harder-type bands. FFAF, Alexisonfire, Norma Jean)
When I turned 15, I sort of had an epiphany later on and decided that music was basicly my life and I needed to surround myself with it. I started buying and downloading and learning to play everything I could get my hands on. Old skool punk, grindcore, Jazz, Rap, Metal, emo, everthing that I saw I consumed and learned to love even the worst of it.
Because of all that, today I am a much wiser person than I was 3 years ago. And I have a band.
Thats my story.

I play guitar and bass. I'm better at bass.
I played bass for this really crappy band for a whole of 3 days, and then I quit. I'm trying to gather a few friends and jam, maybe something will come out of it.

At the moment I only play drums and bass in a "band". Hilarious.
Too bad I can't really do any of it.
It's still fun, though.

I've played for about 5 years. Self taught. My only problem about starting bands in this area... Is the lack of musicians. Every time I start a band, it's mostly with the same group of kids I grew up with. We're all growing musically, but in different directions. I'm more into technicality and melody, in a sense, Greg is more into chug chug metal, and Ben just does his own acoustic thing. It sucks pretty bad, because Ben (drums) and I had this amazing Fiore/The Receiving End Of Sirens/Circa Survive style project going, and had 3 or 4 songs written, were so stoked to show everyone, and then he decides he wants to do bass. It's pretty much like trying to strike oil. You only find it in one spot, no matter how far off you look, so naturally, you're going to be drawn to that spot more and more down the line. But, like everything, it'll run out. Shame that it had to run out so early.

i sang and screamed in a band after eden
http://www.myspace.com/afteredenwe were alright, played a few really good shows....but we had just changed our name from just for tonight (poppy music that went on for about 2 years), so it was difficult to really get support from a stubborn local scene....they either want all hardcore/metal or all pop/melody...and we had both...oh well
screamed for a southern rock project for a while....and now we are about to start a death metal/southern riff-for-fun project.
A serious project thats about to start is my old band adding one more guitarist and trying some experimental stuff....
my best advice to you is to learn to play, and then dont overdo yourself...work on 2 or 3 songs over and over to perfect them

I play bass and some guitar. Mostly bass. I've played in about 7 different bands in the last 6 years. And about 6 years ago is when i picked up bass. The last band I was in was taking off sorta. Chris from Lorene Drive was taking us into his studio to record us cause after we played a show with them they loved us. And we played a tun of other BIG shows and a record label from cal was interested. But then one guitarist quit and one stopped caring and we broke up. But we might get back together soon though. If you care we have one really shitty recording on mypace
(Swansong Marathon).

Playing music isn't about talking shit. I think that's why this board handles it so well; there isn't all the backstabbing and fueding like there is between local bands. I actually stopped going to local shows because bands would get on stage and say, "So, we checked our myspace this morning, and found out that blah blah blah said that we suck. Fuck those pussies. We'll fight them any day of the week. It's ok, we stole their half stack and blah blah blah set their houses on fire blah blah blah raping virgins blah blah blah tube socks."

thats part of the reason why my band never got anywhere in our scene....everyone is so stuck up, that we just ignored them, and people thought we were stuck up because of it....
anyone who talked to us/partied with us loved us to death b/c we accept anyone, but the scene doesnt...so thats just how shit works until you get label support i guess
kyyuulle
May 26 2006, 08:41 AM
actually, i have some advice
don't get stuck on just wanting to learn these popular bands because most of them are very mediocre, expand your musical diversity with different genres and incorporate them into your own music to create something different
if you really want to take your music seriously, play music that YOU would enjoy and want to listen to, push the envelope, absorb constructive criticism and your environment. be smart about it, be open minded
Silentearthx

word.
and about local bands not getting along, I guess we are very fortunate to not have to deal with that. All the more well-known bands in this area all get along. It's great. You might find some of those issues in the hardcore scene, but that's not what we are a part of.

May 26 2006, 08:51 AM
Yeah, it's part of the ongoing abundance of shitty grindcore spewed from Pittsburgh's sewers. No one can shut their fucking mouths, but once it comes time to step up to what you say, everyone hides behind lies. It's fucking stupid.
