James...
I didn't see any "main drum topic" so I guess I'll just post.

I recently started a youth church band to play on Sunday's at (guess what) my church. But I have problems. The drummer from my other band is really good, so we don't have to worry about his equipment and stuff. He can tune his own stuff pretty decent and he knows how to handle his kit without us butting in.

The problem... While the guy who's drumming for this new band is also a good drummer, he has no clue about drum tuning, head replacement, and stuff like that. His kit is really freakin basic. I forgot the brand but it's a respectable one. It's basicly a bass, toms, snare, hi-hat, cymbol, setup. Like I said...sucks and basic.

So to all you drum guys. I need to know two thing.

1.How do we tune this SOAB?

2.We have a limited amount of money. What can we do in the way of $$$ that will go the most torwards making this thing sound good. I.E. Buying new heads, more cymbals.

Thanks-

That set-up sucks? What the hell are you used to? Motley sets with gongs and 19" floor toms?

1. to tune you tighten the pegs in a star pattern, meaning youstart at the top one, next you move to the bottom right, then you move to the top left. then to the right, then to the left and so on.. start with 1 complete twist (tuning is all player preference, some drummers like em high and some like em low) and move up till you find the pitch you like. After that go around the drum and hit on the head close to each peg, each pitch should match

2. put a Evans emad or Aquadrian super kick 2 on the bass. probably remo penstripes on the toms. and possible a remos single ply head on the snare. for cymbals just go around and try stuff out and see what you like best
