I couldn't find an MMA thread.
So I made one.
Some thoughts on the fights tonight:
Heath Herring is an idiot.
I bet he didn't do any research at all on that fight.
He just went in thinking they would set him up with a stand up fighter to "bring the excitment."
See him trying to get the ref to put him up when the guy had side control? Give me a break. What lame fighter, I have no respect for that guy.
Glad to see Ed Herman win, definately not the cocky kid he used to be and he's better for it.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of him.
Next fight should be interesting, but I can't see it being that exciting.

A lot of atheletes/wrester who turn MMA often do improve very quickly.
The difference with Rashad is that he has been able to actually implement his new skills in the ring.
You see a lot of these type of fighters lose their game plan once they enter the ring and fall back on wrestling everytime.

Personally, I can't wait. It's going to be such a good weekend for sports (Saturday, UFC pay-per-view/Sunday, Super Bowl). If anyone has a Buffalo Wild Wings, and you have nothing to do or don't feel like throwing down money, hit em up because they might show the PPV there (they do here, at least).
And Robb, it says that the clip has been removed.

UFC pay-per-views here are fucking mental.
Last one we went to Local Heros (sports bar), and had to stand. Called the other locations, same thing. Called fucking Boston Pizza, same thing. And so on down the list...
In retrospect we should've stopped pre-drinking and gone at a decent time (like 3 hours before it started), but ah well.

Don't be dumb.
I was disappointed with the lack of upsets tonight, but all in all I enjoyed it.
Some quotes of the night:
"I hurt marvin then said Its Time For Black on Black Crime, so I finished him" -Rampage
"Thank you everyone who boo'd me. I'll be back again and you can boo me." -Cote
I really don't like the booing that was going on, it was completely uncalled for.
I wish they would kick out all the dumbass rich assholes at PPV events and let the real fans go.
When Cote rocked Smith a lot of people were upset that he didn't finish him. However what a lot of people did not notice is that Scott Smith was only rocked for a very short period of time. Scott was actually feigning dizziness for the rest of it, trying to lure Cote in for a "Sell-like" finish. Cote actually picked up on this and moved his finger in a "no no" motion.
On top of that you have to consider that if Cote lost tonight he would probably never fight in the UFC again. That is a BIG deal.
So Cote's hesitation to finish was definitely understandable, he played a safe fight and while that may not have made for an impressive victory, at least we will see him again.
Ambush of Tigers
Feb 4 2007, 04:31 AM
Cote fought a great fight and his decision to not be lured by Smith's sucker ass possum plays were right on (and I was actually rooting for Smith too). Bottom line, Smith needs to stop playing those games and know that the special tactics that he and Shonie Carter (spinning back fist) cannot pull off finishing moves like Mortal Kombat.
And to reason with the booing, I can kind of relate as I was booing at the screen when my dude would puss out/do stupid things. I had beers on the line and I'm sure the rich folk at the arena had +$1,000 bets so if a guy wasn't pulling his weight, they were just angry. Now given, that's no reason to heckle the fighters (that is, except Lutter that evening) because they are in tip top shape and can kick virtually anybody's ass, but like I said, I do know where they're coming from.
Overall though, I agree. I had a great time tonight and seeing Mirko and Rampage make their debut was awesome. See ya next pay-per-view.

You know that John Haselman or whatever? The one that got knocked out in 19 seconds? Yeah, we were sitting next to his gf, and tried not to laugh when it was over. But we were glad, because she was annoying and tried to make it seem like she knew everything about UFC and hyped her bf up like crazy.
And then all of Eastmans family were sitting directly behind us.
Also, the only reason I didn't like the Cote fight was because there were a bunch of fucking french-canadians sitting to our right.

I watched Rampage demolish Chuck in Pride in Nov 2003, but I wasn't expecting such a fast clean knock out by Rampage
He wasn't affected by Chucks unorthodox rhythm and fighting style, stalked him around the ring and capitalized with a right counter hook that sent Liddell to the canvas and Rampage just tuned up Chuck's face after that
the undercard was WAAAY more exciting than this fight, Keith Jardine got fucked up real nice

Everyone knew that without a doubt this wouldn't end in submission or even get to a decision, but yeah, I definitely didn't expect a knockout like that so early. I'm kind of glad that it was so fast though so that the totally oblivious Lidell supporters can finally shut the hell up.

You may want to go watch Marquardt's fights from when he was the 7 time Pancrase champ before you call him going out like a bitch in round one. I still think Silva will pull it off.
Do you really think a wrestler will sub a BJJ black belt? I call Sherk by TKO ground n pound in round 2 if anything.
I don't think big nog with get a KO on Heath. I think he'll sub him in the 3rd or it'll go to a decision.

Silva's knees are vicious, but in reality, I don't think that's going to TKO Marquardt, especially with knees however they are going to be a prelude to Nate's demise that night. Personally, I think this bout is going to be one of the more intense fights of the night because Silva's not one to go to decision and Marquardt likes to go the distance. I'm hoping Silva retains the belt, but you're right when you're saying that Marquardt's not a chump.
As for Sean Sherk submitting Hermes Franca, I'm just going along with his style of fighting. Sherk, in his last 7 of 11 has ended his fights via submission. I'm not impressed with Hermes at all and I think that he just likes to throw sloppy/unorthodox haymakers. His BJJ may be good, but I think Sherk will daze the hell out of him, take him to the floor, and eventually, grab the submission.
I could definitely see Big Nog ending his night via submission or decision too, it'll be interesting to see him debut in the UFC and the crowd's reaction. :-/ I felt like when they first announced his signing at UFC 69, there wasn't a lot of enthusiasm but Big Nog's definitely a force to reckon with in the MMA world.

I like Silva as being the champ. Marquardt's a boring fighter IMO.
Sherk has a weak guard. I think Hermes will be able to expose Sean's weakness come Saturday. I think Hermes is better on the ground than just good, so I don't see Sherk subbing him. I think Sherk will end up having to pound his way to victory via TKO stoppage in 2nd or 3rd.
I've seen Big Nog vs Herring 2wice already, so I'm not too excited about it, but then again, it was supposed to Big Nog vs Justin McCully before Heath. Therefore, I'm thankful.

You really think that it's going to really change
just because Rampage is the champion now? I think Dana White is doing a good job of marketing his company into a wider audience. People who don't watch this stuff are only in it for the superstar aspect.
Meanwhile, the die hards of MMA are watching Wandy, Shogun, and soon supposedly, Fedor being signed over from Pride. Obviously, Dana can't control who stays on top, but he's bringing in more intense fighters to fertilize his product.
PS: K-1 fighters have been in the UFC/Pride before buddy. Fighters, K-1 or not, are going to look for a different alternative than JUST kickboxing/boxing/wrestling and that alternative is going to be the UFC because it can draw a large purse if they win the fight/promotion & endorsements from companies.
