I don't work for blizzard, so I can only make an educated guess about that wait.
I am fairly certain we will see Starcraft 2 in January 2009, which means that we have been waiting for 20 months (SC2 was introduced on the 18th of May 2008).
I think we will wait for Diablo 3 that long as well, that will give SC2 1 year on the market without another Blizzard game breathing down it's neck.

blizzard is notorious for missing any anticipated release date

In the grand scheme of things though, its worth it if the game comes out awesome in the end. A delayed game is eventually amazing, but a game that's rushed out will suck eternal.
I really want to see what the other 3 classes are going to be. The Witch Doctor seems pretty gnarly, though I'll miss the Necromancer.

If they add the whole money per month bullshit like they did with WoW, I'm going to be so fucking pissed off at Blizzard.
But yeah, looks awesome, considering Diablo I and Diablo II/LOD were both my addictions back in their respective heydays. Can't wait for Starcraft II, either. However, I was never able to get into any game in the Warcraft series.
I was going to go old school and play a little Diablo I sometime soon, but I figure it'd just depress me when I built up my super strong warrior to level fifty so he could get PKed by level one characters with godly zodiac equipment.

They addressed that in the presentation portion.
QUOTE
Blizzard's key aim with Diablo III is to make a "better RPG," to improve on the story without losing the "opt in" feel. They wanted to remove the generic feeling from their randomly generated dungeons and bring the world to life with better interactions between the player and the world as a whole.
As part of this goal they're introducing an adventure system to the game. Adventures are scripted events that can be placed almost anywhere in the game world, for example one particular location could be host to a number of adventures spanning a cultists' summoning ritual, a haunted house or a caravan that needs an escort. As the player progresses through the game they will encounter different adventures, which will change when the game is played through again, allowing plenty of replayability.
Seems like they're targeting the exact issues gamers had with the last one, just like with Starcraft II. I love Blizzard.
