this band is awesome, if you don't like them, you have shitty taste in music, i'm sorry. yes i'm talking to you nicole.
few bands can transcend the age gap between us and are parents, but the beatles do. they're not viewed as "oldies" (well, maybe some of their earlier stuff is, but no one has really topped any of their later stuff). they spawned the idea of an entire cohesive album, rather than a few singles with filler tracks as the buffer between. they wrote the first non-rhyming song, which was also the first psychedelic song (tomorrow never knows).
my personal favorite album is revolver (thumbs up for jordan's signature). after rubber soul, the band decided not to tour again because they were doing stuff in the studio that couldn't be reproduced live, and touring sucked thanks to beatlemania. so they really went wild on this disc, and it shows. if i was as eloquent as ben, i'd turn this into his atdi essay, but here's my cliffnotes:
fucking hell, i love the beatles.

Haha, thanks for the bold, James.
I'm more of a Sgt Peppers fan. I like Revolver as much as the next guy, but its more of a balance between staying digestibly melodic like their older, inferior stuff, before branching out into new territory. Plus, only the first four songs and the final track really struck me at first, with the rest in between taking a little longer to grow on. Sgt Peppers, on the other hand, was just so amazingly together and awesome from start to finish.
I do think this band is a teensy bit overrated in the sense that it took them like six albums to actually get truly good. I wouldn't even consider anything before 'Help!' really worth listening all the way through.

I read it before I wrote that post. I don't necessarily agree with the fact that they made the first "cohesive" album; other people were writing pretty damn together ones before that. Pet Sounds and Highway 61 Revisited both came out before Revolver (marginally, but before nonetheless), so I'd personally give one of those albums credit for that status.

I'm not doubting the greatness of the beatles..
But I'm sure someone had written a song with a non-rhyming scheme before them.

Digging all the stuff coming out this week with The Beatles. Got to play The Beatles Rock Band Demo the other night at Best Buy and it was amazing.

The beatles are the greatest band of all time. The true kings of rock n roll.

I wouldn't say rock 'n roll. Maybe pop music. Pop rock.

Sep 5 2009, 01:47 PM
They are rock 'n' roll. Rock 'n' roll is completely different from rock, and you're probably confusing the two.

the only thing i don't like about someone of their songs is when they're in stereo and the drums are panned all the way to the right or left, so annoying...lol
mono works nicely for those songs

Rock n Roll is different from Rock, yes. Rock n Roll is like Elvis, Chuck Berry, and the like. The Beatles would be more Rock than Rock n Roll.
EDIT: early Beatles could be considered Rock n Roll

People made music before The Beatles.

Yes but what you're failing to grasp is that it is likely that every band you listen to was probably directly or indirectly influenced by the beatles. Because in those days, they were the hardest thing around.
Anyone a fan of Across the Universe (film)?

I'm not failing to grasp anything. I understand how big of an influence they are. I was just busting his chops.

I like them, but it's too ridiculous that they were as popular as they were.
Someone should up their albums though, I just have shit in random order and all untagged from ripping them.

sayin, i would rather have a discussion then an "attack" or just negative response towards my opinion cause its the "cool thing to do" we have moved passed that... i am trying to be more positive when it comes to the board, and i would appreciate the same respect back.
so... nope. thats basically it. some gospel tunes, a little faster and with more of an edge. sure, he was progressive... but pretty standard if you look back on it. at the time, sure he was outrageous. but, yeah... thats about all he really did. the beatles came along and took what he started and did it right and better. not to mention harder and faster.
really who the fuck was doing something like helter skelter or the opening riff to revolution back then? no one.. that shit was metal!! haha. and dont tell me the rolling stones... bah, one band i hate with a passion. you can put them in the same column with U2.

Elvis was a white guy playing black music. He used sex appeal and lead the way for all sorts of musical collaborations and transitions.
Robert Hamburger
Sep 8 2009, 10:50 AM
Never really understood the appeal. My parents arent really into them either, so I guess I wasnt exposed to them as a young age. Ive listened to their albums and the #1 cds and still dont get it. Some of the stuff is alright but nothing that blows me away. I understand their impact and importance to those who followed, but that doesnt mean that I should automatically love the stuff.
Sort of off topic but sorta not, where did Lucas go? I feel like he was probably a HUGE(ly annoying) Beatles fan when he was like 11-12.
alex.
Sep 8 2009, 11:28 AM
I'm with Russ on this. The only time I really listened to music as a kid was in the car with my dad, and it was always oldies or Motown. I grew up on the Beach Boys and the Temptations rather than the Beatles. I still don't really care to listen to them very often.

i think the beatles did more in leading the way of musical collaborations and transitions.
i cant really explain why i love the beatles so much. i enjoy their entire catalog. every song could be or was a "hit" to me. even the simplest songs just have that perfect structure and melody.

Every song could be a hit because they wrote good pop music.

Rob, the reason why Alex is being sort of negative isn't because its 'the cool thing to do' (which is a total delusion, by the way), but because there isn't really much to say about The Beatles. Yes, they were seminal. Yes, a lot of their songs are undeniably good. Plus we already went through this whole thing when Across The Universe came out.
I mean, its cool you want to create discussion, but part of creating discussion is choosing a topic that people actually care/have some interest about. If I bumped the Dark Knight thread to list how awesome it is people would probably think I'm retarded. So next time don't bitch about 'wanting respect back' and just pick something that hasn't already been done to death.

Opie and Anthony announced today that the entire beatles catalog released completely re-mastered. Each album starting at $12. The box set is going for $200. That's a deal!!
It really does sound great. They are playing the old versions compared to the new masters and you can really hear the difference. Much clearer and smother...
I'm picking up the box set. No dollar amount is to much to have these timeless masterpieces heard in their most perfect way.
