pbfreak617

on my first listen, just water though, love it so far.
not as good as in rainbows, thats for sure.

To be fair, you can't really compare this Thrice album to In Rainbows.

I'm not Lori, but...

OK Computer, Hail To The Thief, The Bends, Kid A, Amnesiac, Pablo Honey. In that order.

I think that if you really like In Rainbows, you'll find yourself liking Hail To The Thief and Kid A more than the others.

haha jesus, comparing something that doesn't even sound like radiohead to radiohead because it uses electronics. come on, dude.
john
I own pretty much every single Radiohead album except Pablo Honey - I've never actually listened to any of it aside from a certain song on it. Is it even worth the download?
Lori
I don't like it.
its simply gary
Thanks for all the helpful advice guys...I've really been looking into expanding my musical taste..I only hear whatever comes my way, so some people go crazy when they hear I've never really heard any other albums such as radiohead's. I know this is a thrice thread, but since we're on the topic; is there any other artists or bands I should really check out?

these arms are snakes!!!
Bobby
what is the best album by these arms are snakes!?!?!?
Lori
Oxeneers is more traditional, Easter is more stoner.
both rule.
its simply gary
Thanks guys. I'll definitely be checking them out soon. anways, back on topic..thrice concert is sold out here in NY, so me and my friends are going to the philly or NJ shows...I seriously can't wait to see these songs live!
bennifer
Oxeneers is my favorite TAAS album.
ben!!!!!
Thrice is amazing. I love the transition in sound from the Fire EP to the Water EP.
john
Transition? They're two completely separate EP's
ben!!!!!
yeah, I know. I like how they changed up the sound and didn't make it generic thrice sound on both EP's
indy
that was pretty much the point.
ben!!!!!
yeah no shit. im basically saying how i like how thrice can go from something like the Fire EP to the water EP and still make it sound good. Most bands can't do that.
john

I was really just bitching about how the word "transition" didn't really make sense, and that you probably meant "contrast." I know, I'm a psycho grammar/spelling nazi, just ignore me from now on.

you are right.
not a nazi.
Jere
I enjoy these songs quite a bit.
tgrokz
theres one song off each ep that im eh about. other than that, its fucking awesome. best thing thrice has ever done
gnossis
most of the songs off of the fire ep haven't hit me yet, but the water ep is real cool. this is a good step from vheissu

Is it song 3 on each disc "backdraft" and lost continent?
john
The Messenger and The Arsonist both make me want to break things. The Whaler is my favorite song off the Water disc.
monsterEATpilot
i cracked couldnt wait till tuesday, but it was well worth it. thrice continues to blow me away. period

I actually like those songs. Admittedly Lost Continent is probably my least favorite off Water, but they're not bad at all.

A general point of contention for me with the Water EP is that i kind of feel like some of the songs could be on the Air disc. To be more precise, there are times on the disc where i'm not sure if I'm supposed to feel like i'm floating through water or floating through the air...if that makes sense at all.
mugatu
to me, at no point on this album does Thrice sound like Thrice
don't get me wrong, I can listen to it and enjoy it, but their version of everyone else's music isn't quite as good as the people who they are emulating, so I'd rather just listen to the aforementioned artists
Lori
word, mugatu
Bobby
It sounds like Thrice is trying to move away from their old shit and diversify themselves. For them to be able to make 4 seperate albums with different genres of music on each shows a huge amount of skill. Maybe I should listen to more bands, but I've never heard of anyone else doing anything like this.
its simply gary
I agree with you mugato. But you have to admit that although they have been influenced by the aforementioned bands, This is just simply what they aimed for. I know it sounds nothing like their previous work, but to them, this is what thrice sounds like. there are so many bands out there that depart from their original sound, thrice is no different. The only difference is how extreme their change was. But when you do read on about who these band members are, I guess you can say this is really what they've been wanting to do.

(I'm kind of sleepy so i know my spelling is off, so please forgive me!)

The influences are pretty palpable at times (especially on the Fire EP - you can smell Isis all over it). Me personally though, I just really like Dustin's vocals, which is probably the main reason i play this album so often.

Besides, it's nowhere near as bad as, say, Wolfmother and Zeppelin.
bennifer
The thing that makes Thrice above average for me is that they aren't all talk about what they believe in, the organizations they've been involved with and their concerns about poverty and espeacially children in need should not be scoffed at or thrown aside.

They just seem like they have their heads in the right place.
john
That's great and all, and gives me respect for Thrice as a band, but it really doesn't affect how I think about their music.

I do like them though.
Lori
I do like this album though.
ant
I dig it. The chorus in Open Water gets me every time.
namernj
its growing on me but im still overall dissapointed.

open water and night diving really do it for me though.
xXx Tears of a Phoenix xXx
i might do a review of this soon, if i can get it first
Charlie.
My boss let me buy it tonight, so im really happy right now.

The mixing is a little odd, some of the drums should have been more pushed back and bassier but its still really good.
john
How does the artwork/jewel case look?

pretty cool. The cd's are on the side panels and the artwork is stapled in the center. Its this very rough/ hand drawn booklet with picture that have to do with the songs with words around it.
If it didnt come out tomorrow and I wasn't so tired I'd take pictures for you.

ps. You learn from the thank you notes that teppei has a son named Miles.

Sounds pretty sweet. And Teppei having a son is pretty weird - i always just kind of assumed he was asexual. Who the heck is his wife anyway?
Charlie.
her name is Jenna, shes a fox. I only know this because I have their dvd.
namernj
the artwork for the album is pretty awesome..
