I think to compare Jay-z to emcees such as Pac, BIG, or Nas would actually lead to a pointless debate...their styles are too different. Jay-z realized his fast rhyming was going nowhere, so he turned into a "studio" rapper, more than a poet/lyricist. He has his one liners in every song, but focuses more along the lines of making a marketable album...I wouldn't blame him, but the media for "forcing" a lot of artists into using this perspective.
Most these artists that get a hit song will never be heard of again because they can't keep making hits or produce quality albums (soulja boy is a good example)...but at least hova continually puts out catchy albums. I am actually surprised Lil Wayne has stayed around as long as he has. I cannot deny that I enjoy most of his full length songs (usually only interested in a few off of his mixtapes), but most of his raps are garbage and the same rhyme schemes and words used over and over again. I am sure there are tons of artists out there with more skill than any of these guys on the radio, but will never be heard because it all comes down to one thing, marketing.

i understand jays buisness skills, he's a very good buisness man. but to say that he's a great rapper is disrespectful to the hundreds of unsung emcees out there who rap as an art form rather than a means to make bank. in this day and age, there' s literally hundreds of rappers out there with better production, creativity, and lyrical prose. these are the motherfuckers that i support and will continue to support. cats like
qwel,
cyne, and
icon the mic king. at the end of the day, all that matters is the sound and the effort that went into that sound. this is why i can't listen to jay. it doesn't matter how long he takes to write albums, his shit just sounds half-assed and insincere.
i honestly want your opinions on the aforementioned emcees.

I'll listen later. I don't see how examples of under appreciated emcees somehow shows that Jay Z is overrated. All I wanted to know is why you think he's overrated. I think overrated is a bullshit word. Overrated how? According to whose rating? Just say you don't think he's the greatest rapper of all time, that is fine, I agree. I think most listeners and those associated with hip hop would agree with you. The fact is that he's probably the best mainstream rapper doing it right now and The Blueprint was probably the best and most influential hip hop album of the past 10 years.
You seem to have a problem supporting the mainstream, that's super cool and all, but don't let it cloud your judgment on Jay Z. You see Jay as someone with no creativity, who says the same things over again, who is insincere, and only raps to make bank. I see him as someone who has transcended generations of hip hop listeners, who has released 10 solo albums, 2 of which were 5 mic albums in the source, and sold over 50 million records world wide.
So I think in a number of categories, you could call him the greatest living hip hop artist. If you're judging him purely on lyrical skill, then do that, don't bring in other stuff saying he's insincere and not creative and just wants to make money. You don't get to where Jay Z is right now from lack of effort and insincerity, and you certainly don't get to that point if rapping isn't your passion in life.

You basically just proved alika's point. The fact that he's sold millions of copy, is precisely because of his business ability. Sure, yeah, he might be the best mainstream rapper. But what does that matter? That only points to his knack for getting himself publicized which ultimately, is to sell his record. For example: He said he was gonna quit; I believe not even a year later, he announced he was come out with another album. Why? So he can sell records.
There's no doubt that he put in a lot of effort for his work. That's where he deserves credit. He knows how to work the public. He's been able to create an entire enterprise out of the current state of public hip hop culture. But... that's about it. That, certainly does not make him one of the greatest rappers of all time. That makes him a great business man.
The fact is there are plenty of other rappers that have infinitely better lyricism, content, and flow.
Stevesy.
May 31 2008, 05:20 PM

i feel if we were having this discussion about jay 7 or even 10 years ago some opinions might be different. his time as a dominant lyricist is basically over and he is obviously releasing material that is much more weaker than his older stuff. i personally think he only comes out with new stuff just cuz new rap is so fucking horrible, especially when his worst cd is 10X better than anything soulja boy could dream of spitting.
people forget he was an underground rapper just like your aforementioned artists until someone realized his potential and gave him a shot, you can't hold that against him because he got popular. doesn't make him any worse of an emcee because he sells records and is on the radio/tv.
