It depends on what you're doing. Taylor make great live guitars, but they really lack in the low end, so if you're recording anything folk, they suck. Martins are super woody and rich, but they don't translate well live.
I'm a Breedlove guy, but if you're limiting yourself to only Taylor and Martin (which would be ignorant), pick which fits your sound better.

i was taught for a year or so and then realized i didn't need his lessons any longer.
my first song was that gay green day song. i suggest you have someone teach you somehow. are you talking about acoustic? that's what i started out on. it helps to strengthen your fingers. if you have a friend who is decent at guitar, have him show you a few of the open chords and the proper way to strum. that's what i usually do.

Ha damn straight man. I learned playing green day and stuff like that a few years ago...I'm glad for it in a way it taught me basic shit. I run into these eleven year old kids where I live who can't play open chords or palm mute for shit cause all they do is try to play avenged sevenfold.

Ya, i started off with an acoustic. I also bought myself one of those Squier starter kits (its not too bad actually)
Unfortunately, i dont have any friends still living down here that play the guitar. My uncle is amazing, but he finger picks everything... which "looks" super hard hah

just pick up a guitar and fuck around. that's what i did. i sat in front of my tv for hours watching international supervideos over and over again watching billie joe's hands, learning every green day song possible. 6 years later.

I've been completely self taught for five years now.
I'd be better if I'd had taken lessons, but that's more money and stress that I wouldn't need. I'm glad I taught myself. I'm skilled enough to play all the songs my band plays easily. And we do some pretty complex stuff. (Think Dream Theater, meets Saosin)

Honestly, it's just about playing the fuck out of your guitar until you eventually pass a certain threshold and playing becomes something else entirely.
I've never had a guitar lesson in my life but I had a pretty good basis in music theory, which in retrospect probably helped a lot.

if you don't want to waste time, at least save up some money and take a few lessons to get the feel of things.
or askk around school for someone who can show you basics or find someone who knows what they're doing!

Martin. taylors below 1k are shit in my opinion and taylors electronics blow so hard... I can't believe people tolerate that shittiness of taylor electronics.

I have gotten amazing comments every time I play my martin live. I have a spruce top martin so it sounds close to a taylor, but I have a fishman blending pickup (and mic) and my dc-16 just causes sound dudes to eargasm because of how perfect the pickup matches the guitar.
... And I use pretty thick strings to beef up the body a bit.

Yeah, my dad just sent his taylor to get a b-band for a good plugged in sound.
but it's tits acoustically, plus his neck feels more like a classical, it's from the early 80's, I think.

i think they're exciting because there's always something interesting going on guitar wise, not just power chords there ENTIRE TIME, and if they
are rocking the power chords, we usually got some a sweet drums and melody to fall back on

Yeah, like other people, i took lessons for a year and didn't get anything
out of it, except an A minor pentatonic scale that ive been playing
since 9th grade. Anyhow, it takes time to get decent.
So learn the basics, try to figure out songs without tabs, and write as much as you can.

robinvargas
Aug 10 2008, 04:16 PM
that pedal is actually one of the most lush sounding choruses i've heard. it's the original 18-volt version. the little "novelty" danelectro pedals i've heard are complete shit but i know some of their more expensive ones have received good reviews. the ONLY thing i dislike about it is that it's huge. i'm posting a link to harmony-central. it has over 15 pages of reviews and it's stood pretty well.

How do I get a "Clean" sound with my G-DEC Junior Amp? Theres all these different sounds on the knob... but nothing is just clean. <--Newb as you can tell
robinvargas
Aug 10 2008, 07:18 PM
since it's a modeling style amp, i'd recommend setting it to the cleanest setting. either acoustic, tweed, or blackface depeding on the tone you're wanting... also, make sure you're not cranking the gain knob. gain, even on a clean model setting, can distort some.
