im bringing back this thread. im really bored with the amp i have now(sovtek mig 100) its just a straight up rock amp and im really getting into playing hardcore music. so what im thinking about is getting a mesa dual rectifier or triple rectifier. and i was just wondering what everyones input on them is. i really have no idea about them except i know they sound awesome.

A lot of hardcore bands I've seen use Peavey 5150s, too. I recommend looking into those because Mesas are teh expensive.

its a bit thinner than most acoustics. it was my first guitar and it was only like $300. tone wise.. with a new set of strings the thing sounds really good, but my friends martin still rapes it in the ass. i like the neck of it, but then again i dont go around playing many acoustics in shops to compare. ive never had any problems with it and it stays in tune pretty well. oh yha and it came with some sweet brown hard case with brown fluffy stuff inside. i dont know if that helped at all, but i tried.

the gibson is the real thing... epiphone is a licensed knockoff of gibson.
if you're looking for a good knockoff of gibsons, go with agile. i've had mine for about 2 years, and it's still my favorite guitar. my friends that have real gibson les pauls tried mine out and said they liked it better than theirs.

guitars
-fender american deluxe with a hot rails in the bridge (sounds incredible). it also has a raised bridge that you can push down on with your hand, and it makes some rad noises.
-fender custom shop. believe it or not, they messed up on this guitar and now it sounds shitty. way too muddy. anyway, it has a duncan invader in the bridge and an emg 81 in the neck, and it was supposed to be the other way around. but it looks cool... haha.
-a crappy ibanez which was my first guitar.
-a really old synsonics acoustic.
amps
-peavey 5150 with a marshall 1960a cab.
-marshall avt 150. i like this better than the half stack.
-crate mx10 practice amp. terrible.
effects
-digitech gnx3
-danelectro distortion (really old, but can make some cool sounds)
-boss tuner
and then there's just other random stuff i don't ever use.
and an akg wireless.

epiphones are good guitars to learn on i suppose
they are contructed fairly cheaply, use cheaper parts
the gibson SG special is a fantastic deal, you can find one on ebay for a great price

i don't believe gibsons are overpriced
they're built to be lifetime guitars and are priced as such
when you consider it, paying 1,500 for a guitar that will play well until you die is a great deal
QUOTE (.dekkert.)

Just thought I'd point that out. Yeah.
I have never played an epiphone that i didn't hate.
They might be ok for a few years while you're learning, but then they fall to pieces.
I have 5 friends that bought various epiphones between 3 and 7 years ago.
On one the tuning machines slip within the headstock making it impossible to tune, the neck warped on another, the input jack has ceased to function on all of them at some point.
The strap knobs have stipped their holes on all of them, needing to be fixed using epoxy purchased at home depot. In the worst case the nut slid out from under the strings.
I know this because I was the one that fixed all of them.
My gibson les paul studio, one of the least expensive gibsons, has never had any problem at all. I've had it for 5 years now. It sounds wonderful and from taking it apart for fun several times I can tell you that its construction and workmanship is flawless throughout.
If you can't tell that epiphones are crappy, then it's probably not time for you to invest in a real guitar yet

i agree with most everything you said, mr. sandwhich. but you gotta admit, some of that money is paying for the gibson brand name. there are plenty of other high quality guitars out there that are much cheaper. they just don't have the popularity. (agile, dillion, more that i can't think of...). don't get me wrong... i love gibsons, they just cost a lot.
QUOTE (sid)
what should i be looking for in "good" guitars?
everyone looks for what matches their style... so it's a pretty subjective thing. as for myself:
-clear/loud harmonics
-long sustain
-good tone
-low action/no fret buzz
-good playability in general (frets flush with neck on top and bottom)
-intonation's gotta be set right (fret spacing, adjustments)
-solid tuners
-it should look good too
-good price
i know i'm leaving something out... but that's a good start.
