Okay, which should I watch next: Leon, The Usual Suspects, Revolver, or Memento. And, are they all good or should I skip one because it's not worth my money or time.

In this order:
Memento, Usual Suspects, Leon, Revolver.
I don't know about Revolver, which is why I put it last, but the other three are definitely some of my favorite movies.
Bobby
Dec 10 2007, 07:54 PM
I think Revolver will be first because I already have that, and I have to buy the other three or wait till Christmas. But I'm taking your word that they are good movies, John.

Leon is the best on that list. Usual Suspects is amazing, Memento is alright, and Revolver is a skip unless you really like Guy Ritchie.

Yeah, I saw it tonight in a regular theater too. That crappy recording doesn't compare to on the big screen.

I believe all theaters have the trailer, but IMAX has the first 6 minutes of the movie. Which looked FUCKING AMAZING in 70mm IMAX format! The depth was specacular, it actually looked 3D.

Does it say anywhere in there that he is actually directing it, though? I only see executive producing. Could make a world of difference.
Reading
this, it seems like Sam Raimi could possibly end up directing them. Meh, after the shitfest that was Spiderman 3, I hope that doesn't happen.

Peter Jackson's producing and I whole-heartedly agree about Sam Raimi. Spider-Man 3 was painful to watch.

Dec 18 2007, 08:39 PM
Oh yeah, apparently Peter Jackson's planning on Executive Producing two movies that are "based" on The Hobbit that are set to be shot simultaneously, and released in consecutive years. I hope that if anything, this means that they'll be splitting up the story into two movies. The idea of an original story set in the LOTR world seems kind of lame seeing as how it obviously won't have much to do with J.R.R. Tolkien.
john
Dec 18 2007, 08:45 PM
Sam Raimi is the man, don't hate. Admittedly Spider-Man 3 was a pretty gigantic shitfest, but that was more because of the weak script and story elements than anything.
And were they talking about splitting the Hobbit into two movies, or two completely new, non Tolkien ideas? Or one for each? I'm getting conflicting reports here.

I agree about Spiderman 3 being a huge disappointment, but I believe a lot of that has to do with the terrible script.
And regarding The Hobbit films: they will be shooting both films simultaneously (as you guys have already stated). The first film will in fact be a true film adaptation of the book, and the second will be a sequel of sorts, meant to serve as "a bridge between THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy - culled from the titanic amount of periphery/ancillary/notated material found in Tolkien's works."
(source:
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35108)I have faith in Jackson--even if he remains only an executive producer--to not let these films suck.

Dec 19 2007, 04:51 PM
Yeah they were. There was some big legal dispute between Peter Jackson and New Line regarding money he felt he was owed, but not paid, by New Line from the LOTR trilogy. It got nasty and the head of New Line said he wouldn't work with Jackson again. But after months and months (probably years?) things have been smoothed over. There was a big press release announcement about all of it a day or two ago.

The Silmarillion? No thanks.
History of Middle Earth books, Children of Hurin etc.
The Fall of Númenor would make a great story on film. The Fall of Gondolin, the Rise of Sauron, The Last Alliance.
I think you're missing just how much great history, story and depth could be explored on the big screen. While there are countless legal problems among others of that ever happening aside, I think it's silly to just throw out the Silmarillion as a poor book for a movie. If you filmed a movie called "The Silmarillion" and followed it like the book reads out, then yeah, "No thanks." But if you adapt a story from all the history in it, then "Yes please."

Oh wow dude, how could I possibly have not read those books...
....THAT'S RIGHT, I WAS MACKING IT UP WITH A WOMAN.
I kid. In all honesty, I always saw those stories as more footnotes rather than the possible basis for a legitimate movie. There's no driving plot - it reads more like a fictional history lesson.
