Full Version: Musical Progression

I personally think music is a change constantly. I dont get how people dont enjoy bands after they have gone through a genre change. Music is an evolving "enitity" if you will. Take bands like underOATH, They've changed their musical genre many times and i hear all the time how some people dont like their new "style". I just dont get it. Listen to a band for what they have to offer. What are your opinions? Discuss.

After reading this post, I was reminded of Poison the Well and Cave-In.
DEP
cave in is a perfect example.

i almost mentioned the jaw, but i don't see the transition from eyewtkas to w/t as THAT big a change.....maybe its just me....
mikexisonfire
i can understand if you dont like a band after they go through a change. sometimes its still amazing music (underoath) but sometimes it doesnt work out as well (PTW). its all up to preference

I PERSONALLY feel that PTW's new shit is MUCH better and MUCH more creative than the bland hardcore that they used to play.

yeah but that bland of hardcore they used to play opened tons of doors for hundreds of hardcore bands out there now. opposite of december is still one of the greatest core albums out there.

also fear before changed a lot on the new cd, i LOVE it still, but its a lot different from odd how people shake. amazing band, one of my favs so i ain't putten them down at all.
SAOdrew
blink 182- their new cd is amazing and nothing like the older ones.
Emericas
blink 182 will always have enjoyable music. I dont care what anyone says. They have progressed and for me they represent a time in my life when i was really young. As with musical change i have grown up but sometimes i like to have a good listen to good ol blink.I think only posers really dis on bands like this because alot of people like them and they have nothing to latch onto to be seen as unique. Listent o music for music.
Uncle Fundip
afi

bad mouth them if you want, but they have gone through one of the biggest changes of most bands

if you can read this, youre an idiot

I can see how someone could get stuck on an band for a sound then be crushed when they change. Sadly i think thats stupid. Music is suppost to change , if it was all the same then what would be the point. Artists chance. Emotions, Taste and style. To me I like when a bad does somthing different while still being them selves.

Although.....Im not so sure about the new "The Used" Cd. It seems to me way different!

WEll to me the new used cd doesnt really pack the emotion there debut did. But its still a progression of style and emotion. Its enjoyable.

i hated the used's new cd. i thought it was horrible, not because it was different, it just sounds very boreing and the lyrics are lame. i loved their debut.
DeathCabForBrian
the new used cd surprised the shit out of me. they are all fucking great musicians. some of the arrangements on that cd are unbelievable.

it sounds like they are trying to hard to sound like mcr, expecially with his little giggles that mcr does.

I personally feel musical progression is a good thing. If not everthing would get too sterile and mondain, then music would suck.

The whole point of making music is too progress, not too just make an album that sounds like a band you like

Totally agreed!

This is awesome, you guys hit it pretty much on the head. Music itself is a form of evolution, and to attempt negating that process is an act of futility. Simply put, music needs to evolve.
ForEsme
Try Saves The Day. I was hooked on them because of Through Being Cool, and now just listen to In Reverie. Chris Conley sort of generalizes this progression pretty well. He just says that the band doesn't try to change, but they naturally come up with different melodies and different songs for what they like to hear.

Music just does that. Bands grow up, though some don't do it well.
Emericas
I love music. I dont care what it is. Rap,Country, Political Punk, Screamo, Rap(to an extent), Regae(ZekeZekeZeke tongue.gif ), Emo, It all is amazing if you actually walk away from stereo-types and take in what these other forms of music have to offer. Its very enjoyable. Nothing beats hardcore tho. Nothing.
adam.
what's that have to do with the topic? weak.

talk to eben from STD and he'll tell you how much he hates the old songs.

nah dude...in fact if it wasn't for Bert adding MCR to their national tour...they probably wouldn't be where they are. Any kind of similarities between the used and mcr are coincidental.

thats not what i ment. a band should not "mature" there sound. it will never be as good as it was in the begining

Staying "true" or original to what you started out as is stale in my mind. People change everyday and along with change their music changes.

How is that concurring? You just stated the exact opposite viewpoint.

i dont think thats true...if you listen to any older songs, and i mean OLDER songs even though the songs themselves are better, you can just tell the band doesn't quite have their shit together. and if anyone hasn't heard the older stuff, i'll be happy to send it. i whore that band too much
robbot says:
damnit, i was trying to get people all wound up....it didn't work

i do belive music should progress...ha
