I was randomly talking to my buddy Scott (from Oregon, he's the guy that knows the guy that took a pic of Cove once from like 30 feet away--sweeet right?) and I told him of my plans this weekend. It involved me and a few friends taking a road-trip to visit friends of ours at a different school and celebrating the fact that they were getting initiated. I've seen alot of hate towards frat-boys on these boards and in the general public so I"m curious, what the hell do you have against them?

Well frat guys have a stigma of being losers that can only make friends by being in a club. and they also have a stigma of being pussies because they can talk all their shit because they have ther frat brothers to back them up. So thats why people usually hate them. and a lot of them think theyre homosexual.

I could say alot of the same shit about scenesters but it's not necessarily true. Hell, Taylor is one color short of a rainbow but I know he's not gay, he fucks model bitches and I'd probably even hang out with him.

Exactly. Hate stems from misunderstandings and this world is full of them. If people stopped categorizing eachother, things would be a lot better. It's like when you go from high school to college..... you find out that cliques don't really matter anymore. At least not around here.

ok. my ex-boyfriend decides he wants to be in a frat while dating me. i was supportive and patient throughout the whole pledge process and then in the end i find out he was cheating on me and various brothers in the frat knew about it and didn't tell him it was wrong or anything and actually encouraged it.

Well, depends on the school you go to. At UCF. Frats are generally a bunch of drunks, druggies, and players. We have this one fraternity, the Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKES for short) who are the scummiest fraternity that fits every stereotype. They outright tried to recruit me by offering this stuff. "Hey man, you should rush PIKE, we got drugs, alcohol, and hot sluts." Yeah, great thing to advertise to the public. In fact, their house got shut down for violating fire codes. One of the things they found were Pike members had illegally built attic-like spaces above bedrooms to house clandestine activities. The inspector said, "There was enough space to put a mattress in there."

One PIKE pledge committed suicide. Afterwards, Police found items in his bedroom that included several prescription medications, $230 in cash, five cell phones, many bags containing a white powder and residue, a measuring scale and several bongs, marijuana plants and syringes Basically, it seems like the pledge was forced to hide the frat's drug stuff and wasn't happy about it, so the frat brothers threatened him. All his friends knew the frat threatened them, and he called all his friends to say goodbye like a week before he put a bullet through his head.

Whats also interesting is a half an hour after the police investigated the apartment, it was broken into and some things were taken. Sounds like PIKE members were trying to cover up their activity. They also said some very inappropriate things at the kid's funeral. Doesn't sound like a brothership I would want to pay to join. I can email/PM the article to anyone who is interested, as its pretty long.


Most of the other frats also fit stereotypes. A lot have gotten in trouble for hazing. One incident involved blindfolding and hogtying members, sticking them in the back of a pickup truck and driving around. The truck got in an accident and a few of the pledges had broken noses, cuts, etc. There was also an incident where fraternity members tied up pledges and women visitors and forced them to take drugs until they passed out. These examples just show most frats are filled with cocky assholes who know they are basically untouchable, because for some reason still unknown to me, they barely ever get punished for the things they do.


All of this, with some other stuff I haven't mentioned, is why I generally hate frats and most people in them. I've only met one group of guys from a fraternity I like, of course, they are one of the fraternities with high average GPAs, as well as several other academic and honor fraternities,

Spending $300-500 to be involved in events like the above and associated with a group that does those things doesn't make it all that worth it to me.

...He wasn't asking for all the personal/financial reasons for not being in one. He was asking why people generally hate on them so much.

I think Frats can be good....but stuff like this is reasons why I don't llike fraternities:[this is in my town]

As funny as some of your posts are, that was way over the line, serious or not, it was ridiculous and disgusting. I've just lost a lot of respect for you, Bryan.

I only generalize when it comes to the reputation of the Frat they are in. Obviously, if I meet someone who is in PIKE, of course I'm going to thing they are a cocky arrogant asshole. Who would want to join that fraternity after all the shit that happened? Only people who would would be people who want easy access to drugs, booze, and sluts.

On the other hand, if I met someone from my friend's fraternity that I mentioned, I would be more open to them, because I would assume they would carry a similar attitude, values, etc of my friend. My old roommate and his friend were in Delta Epsilon. They were nice people who I got along with and were always friendly. The same goes for any with any of their frat members who I met and hanged with. Basically, who you are reflects the group of people you hang out with.

Some frats have reputations, some don't. Therefore, when Frats have reputations, they are usually well earned, whether they are good or bad.

this sums it up nicely... the stereotypical frat boys that get hated on are the ones that are fucking douche bags and think they're gods gift to the earth when they wear their goddamn letters on their chest. Those are the ones that everyone knows. The cool ones are usually quiet about it and most people don't associate them to being in a frat. So next time you hear a frat boy bragging about how many beers he bonged and the slut he fucked the night before... they usually fall into category A. Whereas, the ones you talk to in class who are actually cool and can have an intellectual conversation with you usually fall into category B.

i'm entitled to my opinions though and frats are uber ghey in my book... i tend to lose respect for "pledges"
