sens are a non-cup winning dynasty
the winners so far:Boston. Getting a clear #1 goalie in Fernandez should help this team start to become a contender. With moves they made late last year (Bochenski, dumping Mara) coupled with the Thornton pickup and Manny, they should start to be a little more cohesive with a team that you can rely on to be consistent from game to game. They have a very young core with guys that can just take off and light it up at any time (Kessel, Savard, Boch, Bergeron, Sturm) - they'll finish 7th-9th.
Philly - finally have a goalie that, like Boston, can come in & win games consistently in Biron. Yeah this happened at the deadline, but you have to throw that season out for the team, so don't even compare what they were to be fair. You add a top forward who has insane hands, insane speed...sounds kinda like Gagne. You add Kimmo Timonen, a rock on the point with great vision to create plays up the ice with a solid breakout; you add Jason Smith to bring more grit to the backend, clear the front a lot more (Biron is prone to letting out wild rebounds when he's pressed - like on the power play), but he has a bit of the Derian Hatcher big guy downside; you add Hartnell & Upshall, great younger guys who have the drive to be winners (Nashville), and can put up points when needed (Hartnell: +19, decent PPG numbers for a second unit guy, would've had more points but missed about 20 with a broken foot, needs to shoot more; Upshall: can play 15-20 minutes a game, good penalty killer, quick, lots of upside if he develops through Philly); you get Lupul who had a brutal season with Edmonton, but that's ONE SEASON with a shit team, he had more points in his rookie season than he did last year...another younger guy that brings energy, at least a 20-goal scorer, but if opposing teams jam the blueline when he's coming into the zone, he's done. He's not exactly a sharpshooter, especially from behind the circles.
What do they lose? Pitkanen, Sanderson, a draft pick, and Forsberg. You lose a guy with tremendous speed, you lose a prospect, you lose a defenseman with a bright future, you lose an overrated big name player that could retire due to injury at any time. They'll be by far the most improved team next year.
St. Louis - re-signing Jackman, who showed people a lot of skill over the summer by getting the gold for Canada and performing incredibly while doing it is a solid move. Getting Keither back is a great move. Getting Kariya from Nashville is a great move.
the losers:Toronto - Not because I'm a Sens fan and I want to pick on Toronto, but they get a power forward (that's good) in Mark Bell, they get a solid #1 goalie in Toskala (that's good), and they get a 40-goal scorer in Jason Blake (that's very good). Unfortunately they have too many skill guys and Maurice has to cater to their level & style of play rather than adapt to include some grit & tenacious forechecking up front that Bell and Tucker can bring. It's great to pick up Blake, but this is just a pure Leafs move - ignore your glaring issues (defense, penalty killing), and add more players to the roster that are unproven with great numbers. Getting Toskala is their one great move, clearly, but they also gave up the chance to get Logan Couture, Esposito, Cherapnov, etc..., and they're already overpaying Raycroft to be their #1. This'll for sure cause issues when you're shelling out 3.5-4.5 for a backup goalie (because rest assured Toskala will win the job), and you're already stretched to the cap due to dud moves with your big 3 D.
Columbus - Another bad season, another year of no change. It's just like they don't want to win - nice new RBK jerseys though.
the interesting:NYR makes a massive move to get another high level scorer with Drury, a guy that can be the heart & soul of the team that matches Shanny's style, and he should be able to work really well with the faster elite European players. On the other hand, Gomez is an overrated garbage scorer who had one good season with NJD. Love that article that says he's had a stellar career - he averages 16 goals a season. Maybe he's maturing, but nah, it was a bad pickup and giving him a RIDICULOUS 7 year contract is one of the worst moves you can make. Chill on the long guaranteed contracts, boys.
Chicago - Yanic Perrault, the best face-off guy in hockey and a great penalty killer, gets a year. Samsonov comes from MTL where he was a huge disaster, for a year. They get Patty Kane as the number one pick, they dump a wildly bad Aucoin (he may be slower than Derian Hatcher) for Zyuzin. They re-sign Lalime off of back surgery but a good end to the season, to backup Nikolai, who proved nothing last year. They have the great skill of Marty Havlat, if he can play more than 30 games a year. Basically, this team is top-loaded for speed and skill, and they were interesting at the draft/agent day, because they didn't address their need for size. It's taking a massive gamble that Buffalo wasn't a fluke, and that those are the type of players that can take a team far down the stretch - the difference being that the Sabres had the depth when their skill guys went down with injuries (which will happen with Chicago).
